Weinstein Asian Cinema Fund:Half of capital will invest in China

The overseas capital is investing in Chinese cinema industry including from assistance in the shoot to cooperation, from live view in China to investment of Chinese local films. At present, some international funds, PE, and venture investments are potential trend in operation of Chinese cinema capital.

In Hollywood, the Weinstein brothers have better understanding Chinese film. They are the producers of The Return of the King, and English Patient etc. They are also the founders and operators of Miramax Corporation. Zhang Yimou’s Heroes has made record tickets due to their excellent distribution strategies in North America. Since then, the Weinstein Corporation has issued more films in Chinese such as Dragon Tiger Gate etc., which have better understanding about the great potential of Chinese market. Therefore, they declare that a fund with USD285.00 million had been founded in last month, which will sponsor the development, production, purchase, marketing, and issuance of films with Asian-based topic in the next six years, of which, more than 50% of capital will invest more than 20 Chinese films.
This is a huge fund, which make the two Kung-fu film stars i.e. Jackie Chen and Jet Lee cooperate to create King of Kung-fu. Meanwhile, they have made cooperation agreement between Tony Klontz, who is producer of 24 Season, and Wai Keung Lau, who is director of Infernal Affairs to shoot Hong Kong action movie trilogy. In the next year, they will shoot Chinese ancient-costume action movie The Woman Warrior, Japanese classic film The Seven Samurai. Zhang Ziyi has confirmed to shoot the two films. Furthermore, they plan to shoot the epopee Shanghai.

On the Cocktail Party of Shanghai International Film Festival of this year, Peter Shiao, the master of “铁池” visited Han Sanping, the Chairman of China Film Group. Xiao Yi, who is Peter Shiao’ father, is a reputed Chinese Kung-fu author. The “铁池” PE fund managed by Peter Shiao is organized and established by some former top managements of the major companies in Hollywood. They plan to invest to shoot 20-30 units of film with Chinese element within the next five years. It is reported by Finance that the capital of “铁池” is raised from American Endgame which is an American professional PE investment fund with several billion US dollars. It mainly invests American films and it will tend to invest in China.
It is reported that at present Xiao Yi and Stan Lee are preparing to shoot Chinese chivalry culture-based cartoon heroes. Stan Lee, who is 86 years old now, has created some cartoon roles which have influenced the whole American culture such as Spider Man, X-men and Fantastic Four etc. The Chinese-version Return of the King, based on Buddhism and Taoism culture, will conquer the main market of Hollywood by the cartoon heroes with Chinese element.

In May of 2007, American IDG China Media fund declared to cooperate with China Film Group. They has founded a China media fund with USD50 million to support the young Chinese directors. After China Film Group raises capital, they will invest to shot fifteen units of film within one year, of which, most of them will be shot by the young directors for the first time. At present, Hu Tong Li De Yang Guang, which is the first unit of film shot by the fund, has been completed. It is a film that pays attention to the Chinese Civilian-orientation realities.
Hugo Shong, who is a president of IDG China Media Fund, said that actually the foreigners not only likes the topic with Chinese Ancient-costume, but also they want to know the life of Chinese civilian.
Why did IDG invest Chinese film? Firstly, they have been aware of the development trend of the Chinese market. Secondly, they intentionally invest to train some young directors. Hugo Shong thinks that the key factors of venture investment are investment, product, and talent. They hope they can train more directors through investment of film. Meanwhile, they will introduce the management model of Hollywood for film media capital.
